The update Discord implemented on October 1, 2024, includes a wide range of improvements aimed at enhancing the user experience. This time, we will thoroughly explain the details of the update, from performance improvements in Android and iOS to the addition of new features and minor bug fixes.

Evolution of the Mobile Version: Android & iOS

In this update, many improvements have been made to the mobile version of Discord. Of particular note is the performance improvement of Android and iOS.

In Android, significant improvements to the chat renderer have achieved up to a 60% increase in frame rate. This makes scrolling through chat history and loading messages smoother, realizing comfortable operability. In addition, the memory usage of the chat list has been reduced by about 12%, making the overall operation of the app lighter.

In iOS, the data store has been modified to reduce the device’s storage usage. As a result, the disk usage of the top 1% of users who had high storage usage has been significantly reduced from 5.7GB to 1.7GB. This not only saves storage capacity, but also improves app launch speed and operational stability.

Furthermore, a bug related to the display of unread indicators has been fixed across the mobile version. Previously, the indicator might not be displayed in the correct position when there were many unread messages, but this update has resolved this issue, allowing for more accurate unread message tracking.

Evolution of the Desktop Version: MacOS & Soundboard UI

The desktop version has also undergone changes to improve usability, such as updating the screen sharing UX on MacOS and renewing the soundboard UI.

On MacOS, the UX when starting screen sharing has been unified to a design similar to other platforms. In addition to being visually more sophisticated, the operation procedure has become easier to understand, allowing for smoother screen sharing.

The soundboard UI has been revamped across the desktop version. The new UI has a more modern design, making sound navigation and operation easier.

New Feature: Animated WebP Support & URL Link Overwriting

This update now supports animation playback in WebP format. WebP has a smaller file size than traditional image formats and allows for smooth animation playback while maintaining image quality, contributing to bandwidth savings and a comfortable viewing experience.

Also, a URL link overwrite function has been added. Previously, when text was selected and a URL was pasted, the text was converted to a link by Markdown notation, but with this update, it is now possible to directly replace an existing URL with a new URL.

Other Improvements

In addition to the above, many bug fixes and minor functional improvements have been made.

  • Performance improvement and crash reduction by upgrading to Electron 32
  • Bug fixes related to message search, NFC hardware keys, and screen orientation detection in iOS
  • Display correction of PS5 game activity status
  • Bug fixes related to student hub, emoji picker, profile customization, GIF picker, and user interface
  • Various bug fixes related to chat, activities and apps, audio/video, media, and accessibility

Discord actively incorporates user feedback and is constantly evolving. This update is also part of an effort to provide a more comfortable and user-friendly platform for users. Discord will continue to listen to users’ voices and make further improvements.
